The BC Mathematics and Physics Colloquium Fall 2005

Faculty of Science Division at BCC hold a regular Thursday Mathematics and Physics Colloquium. During Fall Quarter 2005 it will be held at 2:30 PM in Room L-212.

Fall 2005 Schedule

  • October 20 Jim Kelly: An Introduction to Model Theory in Mathematics (or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Logic)

Model Theory studies the interplay between collections of sentences in a formal language (i.e. axioms) and the mathematical structures that satisfy them. Many famous and long-standing problems (including the independence of the axiom of choice from ZF set theory and the consistency of non-standard analysis) have been solved using Model Theory. I will give a short introduction to Model Theory and then summarize some significant and interesting results and applications. I will assume some distant familiarity with some common structures in mathematics: groups, non-Euclidean geometry, and real analysis. The talk should otherwise be fairly elementary to those with a mathematical background.

  • October 27 Butch Devun: Metric Spaces, Topological Spaces and Examples

  • November 3: Butch Devun continues.

  • November 17 Kent Short: Hurricanes-what they are, where and when they form, and what can make them catastrophic
